Pick of the Week
The Substance Film
Coralie Fargeat's bold critique examines the demanding standards for feminine aesthetics as well as the feared consequences of ageing. The veteran actress presents a brilliant acting turn playing Elisabeth, a 50-year-old actress demoted to starring in an aerobics show on television. Forced aside by her unscrupulous employer Harvey, she undergoes an enigmatic and horrifying procedure titled "The Substance". This generates a youthful duplicate named Sue, leading to a steadily more toxic connection between the two. This Friday, Paramount+
The Woman in Cabin 10
This classic whodunit story includes Keira Knightley in the role of Laura, an ace reporter who opts for a break from reporting on global conflict to join a luxury cruise accompanied by a gravely sick wealthy inheritor and philanthropist, her partner, and other extremely wealthy individuals. However when an enigmatic female falls into the sea one night and the entire crew denies she ever existed, the reporter's sleuthing skills kick in. Available now, Netflix
Presence Film
Soderbergh tests his creative boundaries through this nifty ghostly tale shot entirely through the eyes of a ghost. When a household featuring mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe settles into their fresh home, the filming device – AKA the Presence – tracks their movements. The daughter appears sensing the poltergeist, and it seems guarding her. However, the motive remains? The premise is enjoyable that remains concise, with a twist that could catch you off guard. Saturday 11 October, multiple showings, Sky Cinema Premiere
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent
The iconic actor fully commits to his unique fame via this self-referential adventure. He acts as a narcissistic Hollywood actor playing himself who takes on a million-dollar gig to appear at a festive event at a Mediterranean location for the rich Javi Gutierrez. Hired by the CIA to investigate the suspected cartel boss, the actor's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” comes in handy. October 11th, 9pm, on Channel 4
The Black Phone
Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller holds up well even without a follow-up. Set in 1970s Colorado, multiple disappearances has rendered the local kids anxious. After Finney is kidnapped by the kidnapper and locked up in a basement, he dreads the worst. Yet the non-functional line in the room keeps ringing, with ghostly voices giving advice, as the prophetic visions of Gwen, his sister may be his salvation. A solid creepfest. Saturday 11 October, 10.50pm, on Film4
This Dramatic Portrait
In the conflict between God and Mammon, it's a knockout win for Mammon in Michael Showalter's delightfully tacky film adaptation about the fallen religious broadcaster and her criminal husband. The actor plays the corrupt Bakker, who proclaims early on, “God does not want us to be poor,”. He and Tammy Faye begin monetising the people's spiritual convictions. It's an extravaganza of bad interior design, excessive cosmetics and hypocrisy, though the lead actress achieves to present the character with compassion. Tuesday 14 October, late night, Film4
This Espionage Thriller
This week's additional entry from the filmmaker presents a spy mystery as tight as the polo necks worn by the actor's UK spy. He receives a mission to identify a traitor inside the organization out of five possibilities – among them is his own wife. Both actors are experts of understated style, so a delicious mental battle of deception or honesty takes place. Additional actors join in the clever spy entertainment. This Friday, multiple time slots, Sky Cinema
