Everyone is Encouraged to Become the Additional Haim Sisters Bandmate.

"Do you know when you'll be speaking to the band?" a text pops up. "I was hoping to ask if I can join as their newest bandmate."

However, there remains a single issue: The sender also wants to be the Haims' fourth member. What's more, we are in plentiful company. Multiple famous admirers have also petitioned for the role.

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path playing gigs at local delicatessens with their parents. Today, they are multiple Grammy nominees.

Similar to the best bands, they're a close trio. Their music videos repeatedly depict them walking in sync down the roads of Los Angeles. On stage, they perform with such boundless joy you find yourself thinking, "I wish to be part of that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members approached us and said, 'After your show, I got a drum kit'," states Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "That is the ultimate honor. It is a prize in itself. We've done our job if we can motivate young girls to form a group."

"So everyone gets an invitation to be the honorary part of the family."

Award Nod

The band are connecting from their homes, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in promoting their new album, I Quit.

They're right now processing the news it's been nominated for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first female band ever in consideration for the prize.

"I tune into the lists every year, so it almost feels like a surreal movie when your name is read out," notes Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I imagining things'?"

The importance of the accolade resonates with the sisters.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge achievement," adds Alana. "But we're just thankful for the female artists that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Candor

The project came out of a phase of personal change. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that strange liminal space where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to let go.

The themes follow endings and partings. The sisters seek love, but not the kind of love they've had. You can hear them working out in real time who they are becoming.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to make an effort in ignoring the outside opinions and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Development of Sound

That newfound resilience demanded a different sonic direction – more organic and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the drums.

"Percussion is such a specific thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our memoir," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums cannot begin until we find the ideal drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Laughter

The trio's candor fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their personal horror stories.

A former partner broke up with Este over a health consideration. Alana told a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these breakups, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "So to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

An Assured Future

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. Now, Haim are more assured of their position in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with hit albums and an global fan base.

But Haim will consistently be their number one commitment.

"My sisters and I have been making music since I was four," shares Alana. "There is no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still making music."
