At least thirteen people perish and ninety-eight injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the head of state.

The leader announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the year before. This venture was closely associated with his administration's economic goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The building of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a significant growth of its role in public works. They were executed at an rapid speed, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised significant questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party called for an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This pause was requested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "calls for swift accountability."

In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these strategic projects.
